What it all means

Every thing we do in Douglas creek is adding to whether our stream is healthy or not. We go to Douglas creek 3 times a year 3rd and 4th grade only. For example ph determines the water quality. Our sites ph was median to 7.5 that is neutral that means things can live in it. The DISSOLVED OXYGEN was 7 drops the percentage was 70% the do determines the oxygen
In the water. So fish can live in our stream. We also did macro invertebrates we found 4 caddis flys and 9 stone flys. Those 2 are both in the non tolerant very picky about where they live. Next we found 1 beetle larva and 1 dragon fly larva. They are in the somewhat tolerant. Finally we found 1 aquatic worm which is in the tolerant they’ll live any where. So now you know what it all means. Cause we care about Douglas creek.

a big huge dead beaver approximately 500 pounds." This is us standing next to the dead stinky beaver." We found the dead beaver in the beaver dam Karin pulled it out of the beaver dam. Then she cut off the slimy wet tail.

Today we, site #8 are going to tell you a little bit of our site at Douglas Creek.

First we will tell you about the Riparian Zone. The width of our Riparian Zone on the left bank looking down stream is 0-50ft. It’s the sameon the right bank looking down stream. Our site has no Deciduous or Conifer trees. Our Over Head Canopy is 0% because we have no Canopy wich is the trees over the creek.

Next we will tell you our Channel. Our shape in the cross section is like a gigantic U. Our longitudinal pattern is meandering which means our stream curves around corners. Last for this, but not least our gradient. Our gradient is low.

Now I will tell you about my sites stream banks. TheVegetation cover is abundant. Most of the area is covered in grass, and bushes .Site #8 artificial bank protection is 0-25% and our bank is stable and intact.

For the reach habitat we are going to tell you about the % of riffles , pools in our reach. We also surveyed the woody and organic debris. The # of riffles is 0 that means its 0%. There were 2 pools that took up 75% of our stream reach. The woody dibris is modarint. The organic debris is sparse. We have no artifical structure that we found however there was a beaver dam. Also along side stream reach is a road.

Last but not least, land uses adjacent to reach. For this we have crops, livestock, and recreation. It looks like people camp, and fish here. We found a fire pit and also we found bullets.

Our pool is huge. There is a massive beaver dam being built as you can see in the picture. The water was clear.

This is how the plants and animals of the Douglas Creek water shed work together. In site 8 we studied the macroinvertabrates, water quailty, insects, vegetation, animals, and streambank. First, we will tell you about the water quality at our site. Site 8's water is very clean water. There were 15 non-tolerant macroinvertebrates which means they are very picky about the water they live in. The pH and dissolved oxygen showed that the water was clean and had 56% oxygen.

Second, we will discuss the plants at our site. On our first trip to Douglas Creek, the plants were super duper short. The next time they were medium and the last time they were taller than we were. We had to have our site leader hold the witness post because the grass was too tall during our photopoint. There was another plant that was 15 inches tall that had seed heads that flew all over. When Angel got on the bus, he had seeds all over his pants.

Next, we will tell you about the animals and animal evidence we found. On our trips we found 1 rattlesnake, a garter snake and one snake we couldn't identify because it was across the creek in the tall grass. Harley saw a skink. We found beaver scat, deer scat and white fur on the beaver dam from some animal. We also saw an animal footprint in the mud by the creek. The picture is on the blog. It might be a beaver print.

Finally, how is our site doing? We think it is doing well. All the information seems to pass the test for a good place to live.

This is the Site 8 Site Survey for Douglas Creek watershed. The group members are Justine, Drew, Harley, and Angel.
First, I would like to talk to you about the Riparian Zone. The width looking downstream is 0-50%. The width of the right bank looking downstream is 50-100%. The conifer is moderate, the deciduous tree is Abundant, Shrubs are Sparse, and the grasses/Herbs are covering our site. Over Head Canopy is 50-75%.
Another we are going to talk about the Channel. There are many cross sections. Our cross section is in the shape of a u which means we have a pool in our stream. Also are longitudinal pattern is braided witch means that it looks like a braided. Gradient is how steep the water is. At our site the gradient is low.
Now I would like to talk to you about stream banks. Another thing we can talk to you about Vegetation. We have abundant Vegetation witch means that our site is covered with plants. Also we are going to tell you about artificial bank protection. We don’t have any. The Bank stability is next and it is when banks are collapsed just like ours.
To begin with we are going to tell you about the reach habitat. The number of riffles that we have 5, and the number of pools we have is 6. The percentage of riffles is 5%, and the percentage of pools is 6%. In our site woody debris is sparse witch means that there is not very much. Also our organic debris is moderate.
The second to last thing that I would like to talk to you about is artificial Structures. In our stream reach we have I beaver dam, and a lot of liter and garbage. Along side of our stream reach we have a dirt road.
Finally the last thing that I am going to talk to you about is Land use adjacent to our reach. We have recreation and we know that because we found a fishing pole.

All of this junk that you see here shows us that people have littered there and have not respected this place at all. Also when you litter than you are making the environment bad for the things that live there like plants, and animals.So the next time that you see litter will you please pick it up and not leave it sitting there and I know that you will make the environment better and all of the animals will thank you since they cant and you can.

How the plants and animals work together?

We will tell you about how the plants and animals survive together at site 8. First the trees help the beavers by giving them wood for the dam.
The beavers use the wood for there dams they use the dams for homes they use there homes to hid from predators. The dam helps the stream by slowing down the water so it makes the huge pool .Some animals use the pool for a home. Next the brush and trees help animals hide. If we didn’t have the brush and trees animals wouldn’t have a place to hide. If the animals didn’t have a place to hide they would all get eaten. If they all got eaten we wouldn’t have any animals at the creek. Also the macro invertebrates help tell if the creek is clean. If the water wasn’t clean our animals that live in the water would either die or not be able to live there if we didn’t have animals living there their would be no point. Last the people who were there left a bunch of beer cans tore apart parts of the beaver dam and shot a duck. In conclusion now you know how the plants and animals survive together.

This is Douglas Creek site number 8. Douglas creek is east of Waterville. Now we are going to tell you about site eight. First we tell you about the riparian zone.
The riparian zone's left bank looking down the stream was 0-50 ft. If you looked down the right side of the stream you could see 0-50ft of riparian zone. We also had abundant deciduous trees, abundant shrubs, grasses and herbs and no conifers. Next, we will tell you about the channel. The shape and cross section is a flat bottom channel. The longitudinal pattern is meandering. The gradient is moderate. There are no alterations. Did you know that there is a beaver dam? Next we would like to tell about the reach habitat. We have no riffles but we do have one pool. The percent of pools was 80%. The artificial structure at or in the stream reach is litter. Finally there are land uses such as people fishing there. In conclusion now you know all about site #8. I hope you learned what site#8 looks like.

These are some things that we found at Douglas Creek. We also found a lot of beer cans and a lot of wrappers. Harley saw a tadpole .We also spotted a beaver dam it was very exiting especially since we got to make it be in our photo point.
